PGOPHER <Prev Next>

Installation - Linux

The Linux version is not quite as polished as the Windows version, but should be perfectly usable. Any problems are likely to be user interface glitches only, rather than the calculations. (A comprehensive test suite for the calculations pases on all systems.)

The website has a tar file pgopher-i386-Linux.tgz for 32 bit x86 machines - simply download and unpack (tar xvf) and run the pgopher executable. It should run on most recent Linux distributions as is provided the correct libraries are installed, mainly gnome support libraries. (It will also run on 64 bit systems, provided the appropriate 32 bit libraries are installed.)

If the binary does not run on your system you may need to compile from source, or email help-pgopher@bristol.ac.uk. An executable (slave) is also provided for the Slave Editor in the tar file, and this should be kept in the same directory as the PGOPHER executable.

The Help menu entries do not do anything at the moment, but the help files are available at http://pgopher.chm.bris.ac.uk/Help/ and a tarball of the current help files can be downloaded from the website.
