The Mac version is not as polished
as the Windows version, but should be perfectly usable. Any
problems are likely to be user interface glitches only, rather
than the calculations. (A comprehensive test suite for the
calculations passes on all systems.)
Requirements
PGOPHER should run on any recent Mac. Most
calculations will run on any machine; larger calculations
involving multiple states can benefit from more memory or
processors. Some features, particularly interactive fits, are
much easier with a two or three button mouse rather than using
the trackpad or 1-button mouse.
Download
The website has the following
files available:
- pgopher-MacOSX-i386-carbon.app.zip
- PGOPHER compiled for OS X Leopard (10.5) to Mojave
(10.14).
- tabslave-MacOSX-i386-carbon.app.zip - a simple text
editor optimized for use with PGOPHER, the TabSlave
Editor.
Running on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or above requires 64 bit
versions, currently available from as development versions:
- pgopher-MacOSX-x86_64-cocoa.app.zip
- PGOPHER compiled for OS X Leopard (10.5) and
above.
- tabslave-MacOSX-x86_64-cocoa.app.zip - a simple
text editor optimized for use with PGOPHER, the TabSlave
Editor.
Running the program
Simply double click on the zip file to produce the application
that can be run in the normal way. The application is not signed,
you will see a security warning. The method of running the program
depends in the operation system version. On Big Sur:
- Click on "Downloads" and select "Open in finder".
- Ctrl+click on the PGOPHER file and select "Open".
- Select "Cancel".
- Ctrl+click on the PGOPHER file for a second
time and select "Open".
- Select "Open" to run the program
This only needs to be done once when running the program for the
first time; on subsequent occasions simply double click on the
PGOPHER
file.
On earlier OS X versions the process is typically simpler -
control click or right click on the
PGOPHER icon and
select "
Open".
Usage Notes
- Interactive fits are much easier with a two button mouse
rather than a one button mouse or trackpad. (Right clicking is
required, which can be done with a slightly awkward ctrl+click
on a one button mouse.)
- Some operations require the delete (not backspace) key. This
is fn+backspace if your keyboard doesn't have a (forward)
delete.
- A copy of the on-line help is included in the zip file, and
cmd+? should open a relevant page in Safari. You can also
browse the on-line help at http://pgopher.chm.bris.ac.uk/Help/.
Command Line Version
The Command Line Version is included
in the .zip file above; if you have installed PGOPHER
to the applications directory it will be in /Applications/pgopher.app/Contents/MacOS/pgo
or, if on the desktop, ~/Desktop/pgopher.app/Contents/MacOS/pgo.
