Installation - Windows
No special procedure is required for installation; for basic
operation just download one of the self contained PGOPHER
executables:
- Pgopher.exe - 32
bit version; should run on any PC
- PgopherU64.exe - 64 bit unicode version; requires a
64 bit version of windows. This can handle larger problems, but
for most use cases either version will work fine. The data files
are interchangeable.
and double click on it to run the program. The executable can be
saved in any convenient directory. Not essential, but also available
are:
- tabslave.exe, a
simple text editor optimized for use with PGOPHER, the
Slave
Editor.
- slave.exe
provides an earlier version of the Slave Editor.
- pgopher.chm
provides a local version of the on-line help
These should be placed in the same directory as the PGOPHER
executable.
Requirements
PGOPHER should run on any machine, and only the largest
problems will need additional memory or faster processors. Some
features, particularly Interactive fits, are much easier with a
two or three button mouse rather than a trackpad or touch screen.
Usage Notes
- If the cursor does not appear as a cross in the main window,
try changing the cursor theme in the control panel. (The mouse
icon in the "classic" view and then select "pointers").
-
If the help file (pgopher.chm) does not display correctly,
first make sure that it is installed on a local (not mapped or
network) drive. It is in a Microsoft standard format but
security settings mean that .chm files may not display
correctly under some circumstances. The problems are minimized
if the help file is on a local drive (rather than a mapped
drive), or you may have to apply the fixes suggested in one or
more of the following Microsoft knowledgebase articles::
